HeadshotToJosanneNov202014The Root has named Jason Johnson political editor, announced managing editor Lyne Pitts in a statement. “Jason distinguishes himself with insightful and engaging political analysis. We are thrilled that he will be with The Root during this exciting campaign season,” she said of his hire.

Johnson, who holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, has experienced politics as both an actor and observer/analyst. He has held campaign manager and assistant state director positions for both Republican and Democratic campaigns and has served as an elections observer in Mexico and as part of the Independent Electoral Commission in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Johnson most recently was a columnist at The Chicago Defender and politics editor at The Source magazine. He is also an associate professor of political science at Hiram College.

“I’m going to make sure we push the envelope this year, reporting and covering issues with facts, a fresh perspective and an occasional dose of wit and candor,” said Johnson in a statement on coverage plans in his role. “We’re going to hold all parties and all candidates accountable – this November election can bring the African American community into the middle of this Century or we can suffer a policy and cultural backlash that’ll have us back to scrounging for rights like it was the 1930’s.”

Johnson has also done some social media work in his new role, live-tweeting Sunday’s Democratic primary debate and last Thursday’s GOP debate.
