Politico‘s Jake Sherman and John Breshnahan break the news this afternoon that Rep. Darrell Issa‘s (R-Calif.) has canned his longtime press secretary Kurt Bardella for sharing reporters’ emails with NYT reporter Mark Leibovich. Though Bardella is done, Issa, the House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman, insists the investigation will continue.
Included alongside this story: Politico Editor-in-Chief John Harris in a video discusses the publication making inquiries into Bardella’s questionable behavior. “It was a significant concern to me,” he said. …”It’s a serious matter. I can certainly understand why Chairman Issa took it seriously.”
But Politico further twists the knife this afternoon in a piece by Mike Allen analyzing the situation and saying that he had a “cocky streak” and is “known for self-promotion.”
“Kurt has had danger signs,” said a House Republican aide who refused to be named to avoid dragging other members into the storm. “If you had said, ‘X press secretary did this,’ Kurt would have been eight out of 10 people’s guess.
Bardella was on good terms with Politico as recently as December. He attended Politico‘s holiday party at the Corcoran and could be seen jovially working the room.
