At 1:06 p.m. Politico broke the story on the aide to RNC Chairman Michael Steele who quit and then lambasted him. At 2:58 p.m. NJ wrote practically the same story and slapped on a nearly identical headline as Politico. There was no mention of Politico‘s previous story.
Sure, there are subtle differences. Politico says the aide wrote a four-page letter to Steele; NJ says it was a five-pager. At 1:46 p.m. TPM cites Politico and says it was four pages. WaPo wrote a version of the story at 2:50 p.m. and hat tipped Politico. WaPo says the letter was four pages. Yahoo! News wrote the story close to 3 p.m. and mentioned Politico‘s Jonathan Martin, who broke the original story. (Four pages.)
Politico‘s headline: “Top RNC aide quits, blasts Michael Steele”
NJ‘s headline: “RNC Staffer Quits, Blasts Chairman Michael Steele”
