Lachlan Markay, currently an investigative reporter at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank, is jumping ship to join the Washington Free Beacon. He starts his new gig as a staff writer next Tuesday.
“Lachlan’s investigative work at Heritage has helped us uncover some major scoops,” Rob Bluey, digital media director at Heritage said in an internal memo obtained by FishbowlDC. “Of our 14 links on Drudge last year, Lachlan had nine, including the most-read report Heritage produced last year. He was a big reason we nearly doubled our traffic to [policy blog] The Foundry in 2012.”
The memo goes on to say Heritage will miss Markay’s “enthusiasm to break news and eagerness to advance our mission.”
Heritage staff will officially bid farewell to Markay tomorrow at their office by Union Station.
Markay has been with Heritage since June of 2011. We’ve requested comment from Markay.
Update: Free Beacon Editor Matthew Continetti writes in: “The headline to your post announcing Lachlan’s hire should read, ‘Washington Free Beacon Gains Two.’ The WFB is thrilled to announce that on Tuesday both Lachlan Markay and Alana Goodman will be joining us as staff writers. These two enlistees to the cause of combat journalism will begin as general assignment writers, but no doubt will settle into specific beats over time.” Goodman joins Free Beacon from Commentary magazine, where she was assistant online editor.

We’ll miss many things about Lachlan, most especially his enthusiasm to break news and eagerness to advance our mission. I hope you’re able to join us to thank him for his work and wish him well in the new job.
