Deep Thoughts With "Gopher" on C-SPAN

Brian Lamb's "Q & A" guest on C-SPAN Sunday night was former Rep. Fred Grandy (R-Iowa). Despite decades past, Grandy is still Gopher from the 1970s hit show, "The Love Boat," and Gopher is just so, well, Gopher, the Yeoman Purser on the boat hanging out with cruise director Julie McCoy and Isaac Washington, the bartender. Grandy served in Congress from 1987 to 1995. He's now a radio talk show host on WMAL 630 AM Radio in Washington D.C. on "The Grandy & Andy Morning Show." In Congress Grandy sat on the Ways & Means Committee. "The most exciting night in Congress was the night I got elected," he said. Nowadays with his early morning radio show, Grandy has an unusual sleep schedule. He goes to bed between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and wakes at 2 a.m. "What does that say about a marriage when you're wife sends you to bed at 6:30 p.m.? I'm more nocturnal than diurnal - not by choice but my chemistry," he said. "I find myself quasi-jet lagged all the time [and] I don't know if I'm waking or sleeping. I'm still not sure I'm getting used to not getting used to it." (I have no idea if I'm sleeping or waking either through his interview. Please bring Gopher back immediately.) Grandy uses a variety of publications to help with his radio show - WSJ, Drudge, WaPo, Politico, Real Clear Politics and Politico. "I try to graze right and left," he said. These days Grandy describes himself not as Gopher and not as a former congressman: "Now I'd call myself an Infotainer." Asked how long he can keep up this odd sleep schedule, Gopher replied, "Over time this is going to have some deleterious health consequences." Still left unanswered is one of the most burning questions of the last several decades: "What does one have to do to receive a coveted invitation to dine at Captain Merrill Stubing's table and why is it always a black tie occasion?"
