AWRT Honors Stamberg

From NPR's release: The American Women in Radio & Television (AWRT) has selected NPR News Special Correspondent Susan Stamberg for a 2007 Gracie Tribute Award for her distinguished career and leadership in broadcast journalism. An NPR pioneer and nationally renowned broadcast journalist, Ms. Stamberg has worked for the network since 1971 and holds the distinction of the first woman to anchor a nightly news broadcast with NPR News' award-winning evening newsmagazine All Things Considered, for which she served as co-host for 14 years. Currently, Ms. Stamberg can be heard on NPR News' most listened-to program Morning Edition and Weekend Edition Saturday as a special correspondent and guest host, and as a reporter on cultural issues for all the NPR programs. Her thousands of interviews for NPR include conversations with First Lady Laura Bush, Billy Crystal, Rosa Parks, Dave Brubeck, and Luciano Pavarotti, among others. In comments about the decision to honor Ms. Stamberg, the AWRT trustees noted, "This Tribute Award is bestowed on an individual who played a large role in laying the foundation of future generations of women in electronic media. You share the same pioneering spirit that embodies Gracie Allen and the Tribute Award." A member of the Broadcasting Hall of Fame and the Radio Hall of Fame, Stamberg has also been recognized with Armstrong and duPont Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, The Ohio State University's Golden Anniversary Director's Award, the Distinguished Broadcaster Award from the American Women in Radio and Television. An author of two books and co-editor of a third, Stamberg chronicled her NPR experiences and reporting in Every Night at Five: Susan Stamberg's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED Book and TALK: NPR's Susan Stamberg Considers All Things and co-edited The Wedding Cake in the Middle of the Road. Stamberg is a native of New York City and earned a bachelor's degree from Barnard College, and has been awarded numerous honorary degrees including a Doctor of Humane Letters from Dartmouth College. She is a Fellow of Silliman College, Yale University, and has served on the boards of the PEN/Faulkner Fiction Award Foundation and the National Arts Journalism Program based at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. NPR senior correspondent, Linda Wertheimer, will present Ms. Stamberg with the Tribute Award at the Gracies Gala. The 32nd Annual Gracie Awards will be presented at a ceremony on June 18 in New York City. The event benefits the Foundation for American Women in Radio & Television (AWRT), a charitable non-profit supporting educational programs, public service campaigns and scholarships to benefit the public, mass media and allied field.
