For the next two weeks, 11:00 p.m. weeknights, The Lineup: Best NY Movies on MSG will run down a gargantuan group of worthy candidates. On tonight’s debut, the show’s latest panel featuring movie critic Jeffrey Lyons, actor John Leguizamo, filmmakers Ed Burns and Spike Lee join host Fran Healy to evaluate Manhattan-set gangster movies.
The first revelation of tonight’s program is that actor Dylan McDermott does a pretty good Marlon Brando/Don Vito Corleone impression. There’s also a good debate about which is better – The Godfather or The Godfather: Part II.
The Lineup: Best NY Movies is the fourth go-round for the Emmy-winning program. The show previously looked at NYC’s best baseball players, baseball deals and sports movies. Here’s the full schedule:
Monday, March 3: Gangster
Tuesday, March 4: Comedy
Wednesday, March 5: Action
Thursday, March 6: Drama (Part 1)
Friday, March 7: Thriller
Monday, March 10: Sci-Fi
Tuesday, March 11: Drama (Part 2)
Wednesday, March 12: Sports
Thursday, March 13: Horror
Friday, March 14: Romance
The thriller category by the way includes one film that really isn’t – Taxi Driver. But that’s a small quiblle for a program that offers very entertaining and anecdote-filled panel discussions.
In support of the series, MSG Network will be sponsoring two special screening events at Clyde Frazier’s Wine and Dine restaurant (March 4, 11). There will be free popcorn and soda as well as giveaways each night, framed around a 7 p.m. screening of an episode followed by the best movie as selected by the panel in that episode.
Tune in tonight to find out which of the following wins the coveted “gangster” crown: The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, A Bronx Tale, Gangs of New York or Goodfellas.
