Low Numbers for MSNBC’s Clinton-Sanders Debate

4.49 million tune in.

Whether it was the fact that MSNBC had about two days to promote its debate once it became DNC-sanctioned Wednesday, or it was dealing with an audience that is perhaps just debated-out, last night’s Democratic debate was the lowest rated this season.

The debate averaged 4.49 million viewers and 1.2 million in the A24-54 demo, according to early Nielsen research. The next-lowest debate, ABC’s Dec. 19 Democratic debate, averaged 7.85 million viewers with 1.9 million in the A25-54 demo.

It was a good night for moderators Rachel Maddow and Chuck Todd–who were praised for the way they handled the debate–and a good night for Democrats, who got to witness an exciting one-on-one duel, but only, as it turns out, for those few million who tuned in to watch the show.
