California Doesn’t Fare Well in National Headline Awards*

California had few finalists, but wound up taking home two prizes in the National Headliner Awards, given out annually by the Press Club of Atlantic CityCalifornia Watch won first place for online only website while San Francisco’s CBS5 won for best documentary. The Boston Globe, meanwhile, racked up nine awards alone. Can’t necessarily cite east coast bias here, as the Portland Oregonian has done just fine in past awards. We’re hoping the heavy hitters in California just sat this one out.

Other California finalists include the San Jose Mercury News in the photography category for single photo and KCBS Radio San Francisco for best newscast.

*Update: This post originally mixed up several of last year’s winners with the 2011 crop. It has been significantly amended.
