Boston Globe to Charge for Site Access

The Boston Globe has told its union bosses that the paper will soon begin charging readers to use its Web site, Boston.com.

The Boston Herald reported Friday that the paper’s publisher P. Steven Ainsley informed the unions of the decision on Thursday. Neither the specifics of the plan nor a potential date to begin charging have been officially announced.

“It’s going to happen one way or another,” Globe spokesman Bob Powers told the Herald. “We are looking at several different options, and the goal would be to generate revenue.”
