Baltimore Sun Seeks 25 Buyouts

The Baltimore Sun is looking to cut 20 to 25 positions through a voluntary buyout, reports the Daily Record. That includes 10 newsroom employees—”two columnists, two critics, an editorial writer, two copy editors, two design editors and a photographer.”

This is the first buyout for the Sun since 2008, though 61 employees lost their jobs in 2009.

In March of this year, guild-covered Sun employees agreed with management to accept a new contract that froze wages for two years but raised the company’s contribution to employee 401(k) plans.

According to the newsroom chair for the Sun’s guild unit, management is meeting with the Guild this afternoon to discuss the buyout proposal.
