Granted, it’s a stretch to dream of becoming rich amid today’s economic travails. But can we at least dream of becoming middle class?
As you can see from the chart, which excerpts a StrategyOne poll, fulfilling even that more modest ambition seems like no sure thing for many Americans.
On the plus side, the “American Dream” is a sufficiently flexible concept that many people can feel they have achieved it, even if this entails a degree of defining down.
At any rate, when asked in the same survey (fielded last month) whether they’re “living the American Dream today,” 52 percent said they are.
