Y&R Enlists CD on Land Rover

LOS ANGELES WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam Brands has hired ex-Toyota creative Miles Turpin to lead its Land Rover team, said Anthony DiBiase, executive creative director, to whom he will report.

Turpin, who in late 2004 moved to Omnicom’s Energy BBBO after ending a 10-year stint at Publicis Groupe’s Saatchi & Saatchi, starts today at Y&R in Irvine, Calif. Earlier in his career, he worked at TBWA\Chiat\Day, Team One, FCB and Della Femina Travisano.

“I’m excited about the job because Anthony and [managing partner] Rick [Eiserman]’s background is very nontraditional,” Turpin said. “They’ve done what the rest of the industry is only promising will happen.”

At Energy BBDO he worked on LaSalle Bank, Wrigley and Aleve (including a Super Bowl spot in which the pain reliever allowed Leonard Nimoy to spread his fingers for his signature “Live long and prosper” salute).

Turpin said he was “especially happy to be back on cars with Land Rover, the luxury SUV for the twenty-first century. This is an opportunity to jump back in on a high-profile automotive brand that means something.”

“I am very excited by his book and experience,” DiBiase said. “It doesn’t happen that you get over-delivery after you’ve decided on people.”

DiBiase said he was most impressed with initiatives such as the integrated Toyota Corolla “Pimp My Ride” program. “He has been walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Using content interesting to the consumer, he was able to reach the target in a new exciting way,” he said.

DiBiase said Turpin would also have other duties, such as Callaway Golf. “His ideas are good and, more important, he’s a hands-on creative director. He shepherds ideas through the approval process [like] the supreme craftsmen,” DiBase said.
