Off Week for Holding Cos.

Strong advances by tech stocks last week buoyed the Dow Jones Industrial average to its highest close in four months, while the Nasdaq continued its winning streak as prices rose for the fourth week in a row. On the Big Board, ad holding company stocks underperformed in comparison to the broader market, noted David Doft, an advertising and marketing services analyst at CIBC World Markets. After IPG reported a soft first quarter with indications that the second quarter would not be substantially different, its shares traded downward 0.3 percent for the week to close at $11.89; Omnicom rose 5.2 percent to $66.15; and British holding company WPP, trading as American Depository Receipts on the Nasdaq, climbed 2.3 percent to $37.30. —David Kaplan
