Top Y&R Appointment Is Close

Young & Rubicam is expected to name former agency executive Don Williams president of its office here this week, sources said.

Williams re-signed last spring as chief marketing officer at Champion Enterprises, the nation’s largest builder of pre-fabricated homes and a Y&R client. Before his three-year run at the Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Champion, he was a top executive at Y&R on Ford Motor Co.’s Lincoln Mercury account, which has since moved to the agency’s Irvine, Calif., office.

He would replace Laurie Null, who is leaving the Dearborn, Mich., agency Aug. 16 to take the top job at the Irvine office of Wunderman, Y&R’s promotional unit [Adweek, Aug. 6].

Null said she could not confirm Williams would replace her, and that agency hierarchy was still signing off on an appointment. But she added that an announcement is expected this week.

Williams could not be reached for comment.

Y&R Detroit has struggled to build a client base since the Lincoln Mercury account was moved west in 1998, but Null emphasized that there are no plans to close the office as is persistently rumored in the local ad community.
