NEW YORK TBWA\Chiat\Day has promoted Dan Goldstein to executive director of planning at the shop’s Playa del Rey, Calif., office.
Goldstein, 35, was previously deputy planning director. He succeeds Julie Liss, who is leaving to become chief strategy officer at Publicis Groupe’s Publicis & Hal Riney in San Francisco.
In his new role, Goldstein will manage a department of about 35 planners and continue to work on key clients such as Visa. He joined the Omnicom Group shop three years ago from sister agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco.
“I am confident that Dan will bring a fresh perspective to the role and create new and creative ways to apply branding insights that result in engaging connections on behalf of our clients’ brands,” said Carisa Bianchi, president of the office.
Earlier in his career, Goldstein held planning posts at Bartle Bogle Hegarty in London — where his clients included Axe, Johnnie Walker, Sega and Barnardo’s — and at St. Luke’s in London, where he worked on British Telecom. His other client experience includes Saturn, Motorola and Sprint (at Goodby) and Nissan and Infiniti (at TBWA\C\D).
The planning appointment comes two weeks after co-executive creative director Al Kelly exited the agency. Kelly left 3-1/2 months after TBWA\C\D hired him, primarily to lead creative efforts on key account Pepsi.
At the time, the agency changed its title structure so Kelly could keep the title he held at Publicis’ Fallon in Minneapolis, where he had been replaced by Publicis Mojo’s Darren Spiller. Previous office ecd Rob Schwartz became chief creative officer and group cd Patrick O’Neill rose to co-ecd.
O’Neill will “continue as sole ecd of this office” and TBWA\C\D has “no plans to fill” Kelly’s post “at this time,” an agency representative said. His duties have been absorbed by Schwartz and Lee Clow, global director of media arts.
