Petsmart Cuts Doner Loose

DETROIT — Doner and Petsmart have split, and the client is working with “several shops,” a company represenative said.

The contract between the Southfield, Mich., agency and the Phoenix, Ariz-based pets supply retailer expired Sept. 30 and “we chose not to renew or renegotiate,” said Heather Robertson of Petsmart. “Our needs and priorities and work plans have changed.”

Petsmart has no plans for conducting a review and plans to work with several agencies on a project-by-project basis, Robertson said.

Media buying remains with MediaEdge:cia., Chicago.

Doner won the $20 million creative-only account in December 2000, besting incumbent Publicis in the West, Seattle, and finalists The Richards Group, Dallas; Campbell-Ewald/West, Los Angeles; and Leo Burnett, Chicago.

Petsmart svp of marketing Marcia Meyer, who was on board when Doner was hired, retired about a year ago and was replaced by Susanne Eiselsberg, who resigned on Oct. 11, Robertson said. Marketing is being handled by president and COO Robert Moran.
