Orbitz Solicits Ideas From BBDO

CHICAGO Internet discount travel site Orbitz has asked Omnicom Group’s BBDO to present ideas for a project, according to sources.

The client’s lead agency is WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam.

A representative for the client, which is also based in Chicago, offered this statement: “Y&R is still a valued partner and continues to be our agency of record.” Both BBDO and Y&R declined comment.

The scope of the project under discussion with BBDO’s Chicago office was unclear.

Orbitz, which was purchased last November by Cendant Corp., spent nearly $25 million on advertising from January to October 2004, and nearly $40 million in 2003, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

Y&R won the account in Feburary 2003 following a review that included Omnicom’s Element 79 and Publicis Groupe’s Leo Burnett, both in Chicago.

The shop’s most recent Orbitz ads, which broke last April, feature people seeking adventures and the tagline, “Orbitz. And go.”
