BBDO Names Strategic Director
NEW YORK–BBDO here has appointed Matt Seiler to the new post of executive vice president, director of strategic services. Seiler, 36, who was previously senior global account director on the agency’s Frito-Lay business, is charged with building the shop’s strategic planning capabilities. He will report to Bill Katz, president and chief operating officer.
Glaxo Taps McCann Abroad
NEW YORK–McCann-Erickson Worldwide has won the $68 million over-the-counter ad account for Glaxo Wellcome’s Beconase, Zantac and Zovirax brands in Western Europe and Australasia. McCann’s London office prevailed over Leo Burnett and Scholz & Friends, both London, in a three-month review. The shift does not affect the client’s ongoing $150 million media review in the U.S.
Bozell in Seattle Nabs BofA Unit
LOS ANGELES–Bozell Worldwide’s Seattle and San Francisco offices were selected to handle Bank of America’s Global Investment Banking Group in San Francisco. Billings are undetermined pending further discussion with the client, but agency executives said the assignment involves advertising and promotional duties. Bozell, New York, and sister agency Temerlin McClain, Dallas, won the creative portion of the estimated $80-100 million BofA account in December [Adweek, Dec. 21].
Rite Aid, GNC Launch Search for Co-Venture
CHICAGO–Rite Aid Corp. and General Nutrition Cos. are searching for an agency to advertise a new line of vitamins and nutritional supplements that GNC will manufacture as part of a joint venture. Ad spending for the new PharmAssure brand will be $30 million in the first year. Beth Kaplan is executive vice president of marketing for Rite Aid and Greg Horn, executive vice president, marketing at GNC. Marc Advertising in Pittsburgh is Rite Aid’s agency; Deutsch, New York, handles GNC.
DDB Adds Hotels, Wireless Work
CHICAGO–DDB Needham Chicago will handle creative and media duties for the launch of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide’s W Hotels, starting with W New York in November.
DDB handles creative duties for Starwood’s Westin Hotels. The budget is undisclosed.
Separately, the shop added U S West’s $20 million wireless business; it had won the Denver telecommunications company’s $70 million corporate account last June. U S West Wireless was handled by Dailey & Associates in Los Angeles.
Breuners Account Moves to Fogarty
DALLAS–Breuners Home Furnishing Corp. in Lancaster, Pa., consolidated its $20 million creative and media account at Fogarty Klein & Partners, Houston, following a review of undisclosed shops. It operates five retail chains: Breuners, Arnolds, Huffman-Koos, Good’s and Wayside. Creative duties were handled by Lance Benefield & Co. in Phoenix. Media was shared by Media Inc., New York; Universal Media, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and JL Media, Union, N.J.
