Mullen Hires SVP on GM Card Business

BOSTON Interpublic Group’s Mullen said it has added Joyce Karel as svp, account director in its Detroit office.

Karel will oversee the agency’s General Motors Cardmember Services account and play a role in running the outpost day-to-day. She replaces Katherine Kress, who left in January to join Urban Science.

Karel joins Mullen from Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool, where she served as marketing director. In this role, Karel oversaw all relationship marketing and online advertising efforts across Whirlpool’s brand portfolio.

“Joyce is a world-class marketer with deep integrated experience,” said Tom Jump, managing partner at Mullen.

Karel said, “Mullen is a smart agency that is clearly out in front developing and executing breakthrough cross-channel communications for clients.”

Her past experience includes stints at agencies such as Digitas in Boston and Savatar, a Boston-based CRM consultancy.

Wenham, Mass.-based Mullen has worked for Whirlpool in the past, and its current client roster, in addition to GM, includes,, MassMutual,, Panera Bread and Wachovia, among others.
