What's the first information you consume in the morning?
The first thing I look at is The New York Times, hard copy. Then I check my email. I like to keep my inbox clean, so I purge the overnight emails and "junk" first thing. Then I look at Instagram and Twitter to see if anything big happened overnight in the social media space. If it's Monday, I watch Good Morning America, then Live With Kelly and Michael while finishing the Sunday Times and The Sunday Long Read from ESPN's Don Van Natta, which, along with The New Yorker, is the source for my favorite reading of the week.
Tell us about your social media habits. What are your go-to platforms and how do you use them?
I use Twitter, Instagram and Spotify most often. The immediacy of Twitter is especially appealing because I can connect with people and answer #HowTo questions in a short amount of time. I love Instagram, too, because it's a good way to keep tabs on the food that our restaurants are serving around the world.
Who do you follow?
I follow chefs like Dominique Ansel, Daniel Boulud, Jamie Oliver, Hugh Acheson and Andrew Zimmern for food porn; traditional outlets like Food + Wine, Identità Golose, Saveur and Bon Appétit to stay relevant in food pop culture; Action Bronson and Munchies for fun and vision; Jen Davidson on Instagram for buildings and food; and pals like Jimmy Fallon, Anthony Anderson, Mariska Hargitay, Liv Tyler and Michael Strahan to keep tabs on their whereabouts.
What food blogs do you regularly read?
I read Food52, Brooklyn Munch, Grub Street, The Gurgling Cod, Parla Food, Maureen Fant and Elizabeth Minchilli in Rome.
What are your favorite apps?
Spotify and Sonos are the most important apps in my life. GHIN, Golfshot and Dark Sky are the trifecta for the days I play golf. My favorite food apps are Slow Food and Michael Ruhlman's Ratio. Seafood Watch by Monterey Bay Aquarium is my handbook for buying fish; I reference it almost every time I'm at the market. And Bento is the app we use to catalog my recipes. It's a good reference for when we're developing new dishes for The Chew or new cookbooks.
What TV shows do you watch?
This Week With George Stephanopoulos and CBS Sunday Morning are always on my DVR, and Larry Wilmore, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Jon Stewart for nighttime channel surfing.
What's the last show you binge-watched?
The Blacklist. It's incredibly addicting, and James Spader is captivating.
What's on your reading list?
The Laughing Monsters by Denis Johnson, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki by Haruki Murakami and The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.
How do you wind down at night?
I like to read in bed while watching The Daily Show, Fallon or Kimmel.
