JWT West Revamps Its Helm

SAN FRANCISCO–David Riemer has been promoted to the top post at J. Walter Thompson West in San Francisco, as Steve Darland, president, general manager and global business director on Sprint, moves to a new position in the agency.

Riemer, 39, is now agency president and global business director on the Sprint account. He formerly served as group account director for Sprint. Riemer reports to Peter Schweitzer, JWT president in New York.

John Geoghegan, 39, has advanced to general manager of the agency from his position as director of client services. He will report to Riemer and oversee internal operations and business development.

After a decade of leading JWT’s San Francisco office, Darland is moving to a new role, working with Chris Jones, chief executive officer of JWT Worldwide. Darland will work in New York and San Francisco, said an agency representative, who added that specifics of Darland’s new job are being hammered out.

‘As the new generation of managers, our goal is to reenergize and reinvent this place,’ Riemer said.

Changes will not be immediate, according to the two executives. First they will work with staff to identify ‘stuff that is not working,’ Riemer explained.

JWT recently lost the California Lottery account in a mandatory review and parted ways with Sun Microsystems. Last year it unsuccessfully bid for the Sprint PCS account. Sprint is now evaluating the way it distributes its ad assignments between JWT and its business-to-business roster shop Grey Advertising in New York.
