JWT Snares Novell

J. Walter Thompson’s glo bal reach and the consulting background of chief strategy officer Rob Sca lea led Novell to hand the shop its $30 million account last week, sources said.

Novell awarded creative and media chores to the New York agency. Client rep Bruce Lowry cited cost savings and JWT’s “extreme global reach and effectiveness.” SicolaMartin in Austin, Texas, and OMD in Dallas previously handled creative and media, respectively.

Sicola defended the account, tapping into the resources of WPP Group sibling Young & Rubicam, New York. That team was a finalist, along with Interpublic Group agencies Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Boston, and Mullen, Wen ham, Mass., sources said.

Orem, Utah-based Novell is looking to portray itself as a global pro vider of technology solutions, following its acquisition last year of e-commerce consulting firm Cambridge Technology Partners in Cam bridge, Mass.

Scalea joined JWT from Hill, Holliday in May as chief strategy officer for North America. He is charged with building a consulting practice at the WPP shop. According to a source, former CTP executives involved in the selection process felt that Scalea “spoke the language of consulting, their language, and pledged to bring that discipline to bear” on marketing goals. Scalea did not return calls.

The Novell review was nearly scuttled after disagree ments between former CTP executives and new owners at Novell over budget levels and strategic direction, sources said.
