Jerry Seinfeld Has Become a Therapist to the Stars

For all the talk about “premium video” online, few ad-supported Web series have made the case that their product is just as good as anything on TV as effectively as Crackle’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, brainchild of Jerry Seinfeld.

The series has won Gold in the Programming Series category in Adweek's first Watch Awards competition, which celebrates the best work and talent in online video.

“He had this idea for a different way to do a talk show that made it very accessible for consumers and was accessible on the go,” says Eric Berger, evp of digital networks and gm of Crackle. “It wasn’t just people sitting on a couch and talking; it was just two comedians talking about the trade out in their normal lives.”

Granted, few of our “normal lives” include driving around in a 1976 AMC Pacer with George Costanza to a diner where Newman happens to drop by.

“Jerry is very into cars,” as Berger notes. “He has a huge collection, so he thought it would be fun to select a car that matches the personality of the person he’s meeting with.”

For example, Carl Reiner got a ride in a 1960 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II. (“As a car, it’s horrible,” observes Seinfeld, “but it’s a nice living room with wheels.” Reiner: “Was that your car making that noise?” Seinfeld: “Yeah.” Reiner: “Wow. This is not very elegant.”) Obviously, it’s a good one for the automotive category, specifically presenting sponsor Acura.

Comedians in Cars, says Berger, manages to get some of comedy’s biggest names to talk about their work and what it’s like trying to make a living being funny. Along the way, he adds, Seinfeld is “really cataloging a piece of entertainment history. … I don’t think it started out that way, but one day we’re going to look back on this and we’ll be able to see this very unique culture. It’s a gift. And we’re still very much at the beginning.”
