Campbell-Ewald Still Troubled in L.A.

DETROIT—Campbell-Ewald Advertising’s bid to grow in the West has been stymied by a lack of new business, leading to layoffs that sources said left just enough staffers to handle the shop’s two active clients: regional Chevrolet business and Farmers Insurance. Among those let go was Debra Samuels Wurzel, evp and managing director. CEA spokesman Mark Benner said others have been let go, too, but declined to give a number. The office is being run by executive creative director Debbie Karnowsky and Farmers account chief Jim Klock. Benner said there are no plans to close the office and denied that Kar nowsky may return to CEA’s Warren, Mich., base.

Northrop Appoints McCann-Erickson

LOS ANGELES—Northrop Grumman Corp. awarded its $7 million-plus creative and media account to McCann-Erickson in Los Angeles. The aerospace and defense company worked with BBDO West in Los Angeles for the past eight years. BBDO dropped out of the review when its Chicago office was named a finalist for Boeing’s $70 million account. Other Northrop finalists included Ogilvy & Mather in Los Angeles and New York and E. James White Communications in Herndon, Va. Billings through BBDO were estimated at $3-4 million.

Wieden Unveils Powerade Campaign

LOS ANGELES—Coca-Cola’s Powerade breaks a campaign this week tagged “Very real power.” TV ads from Wieden + Kennedy, Portland, Ore., show an outfielder smashing through a wall to make a catch, a man balancing a car on his head and pro quarterback Michael Vick throwing a 180-yard pass. Atlanta-based Coke says only some of the feats are real, and challenges viewers to decide which. Coke is expected to spend $60 million relaunching Powerade. Wieden won the account in May.

Pinnacle West Cuts to 4

LOS ANGELES—Phoenix-based energy and real estate development company Pinnacle West Capital Corp. cut to four finalists in the review for creative on its estimated $4 million account. They are: DDB and D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, both in Los Angeles, GMO Hill/Holliday, San Francisco, and E.B. Lane Marketing Communications, Phoenix. A decision is due in mid-September.

Suzuki Search Continues

DALLAS—American Suzuki Motor Corp. is looking for a regional shop for its Southern and Western markets. The budget for each is $5-10 million. Duties include marketing for the Brea, Calif., client’s motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Incumbent Quarry Communications, Dallas, will not defend. National advertising, handled by Colby & Partners, Santa Monica, Calif., is not affected.

Peter Piper Pizza in Review

LOS ANGELES—Peter Piper Pizza, a Scottsdale, Ariz., pizza and entertainment chain with 93 restaurants in nine states, is reviewing creative and media. An RFP went to 12-15 agencies primarily on the West Coast, said vp of marketing Mark Seifert. Moses Anshell in Phoenix, the 12-year incumbent, was invited to defend. The client spent approximately $3 million on ads last year, per CMR.
