Universal Studios Briefs 6 Shops

NEW YORK—Universal Studios met with six agencies in Orlando last week in the $30-40 million creative review for its theme parks. The shops were: davidandgoliath, Los Angeles; Deutsch, New York; The Martin Agency, Richmond, Va.; McKinney & Silver, Raleigh, N.C.; The Richards Group, Dallas; and Doner, Southfield, Mich. Incumbent Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG is not defending, sources said.

Pickett Advertising Acquires Rd/FOX

SAN FRANCISCO—Pickett Advertising has acquired fellow San Francisco shop Rd/FOX for an undisclosed sum. Rd/FOX has annual billings of $30 million and has worked with such clients as Robertson Stephens, Adams Golf, the Oakland Raiders, At Home and Pearl Vodka. Rd/FOX will move to Pickett’s offices, and CEO Robert deStefano will join Pickett’s management team.

Friday’s Sues Carl’s Jr. Over Six Dollar Burger Ads

LOS ANGELES—CKE Restaurants’ Carl’s Jr. ads for its new Six Dollar Burger have prompted a suit by the T.G.I. Friday’s chain. Dallas-based Friday’s filed suit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles charging that the ads are false and misleading. The campaign from Mendelsohn/Zien in Los Angeles includes an in-store display comparing the Six Dollar Burger to “the burger I just paid about $6.25 for at Friday’s.” All parties declined comment.

Former Wieden Planning Director Grossman Dies

LOS ANGELES—Claire Grossman, former planning director at Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., has died at the age of 44 after a battle with cancer. Grossman, who had been on medical leave since early 2000, had worked on Miller High Life. A memorial service will be held Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at Temple Beth Israel in Portland.

Red Roof Inn Launches Review

DALLAS—Red Roof Inns put its estimated $8-10 million creative account in review. RFPs were sent to nine agencies nationwide last week, including shops in California, Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Dallas, sources said. Incumbent The Richards Group in Dallas will retain media planning and buying.

SAN FRANCISCO—Foote, Cone & Belding in San Francisco promoted svp and client creative director Tom O’Keefe to executive creative director. O’Keefe, 38, replaces Rooney Carruthers, who is returning to the U.K. after 15 months as ECD. … Odiorne Wilde Narraway & Partners rehired two former creatives to run its London office. Paul Foulkes and Tyler Hampton, both 31, recently worked at Ground Zero in Marina del Rey, Calif.

Shakey’s Hires Big Imagination Group

LOS ANGELES—Restaurant chain Shakey’s hired Big Imagination Group in Culver City, Calif., without a review to handle branding, identification and trade advertising programs for a new line of products in development. The budget was undisclosed. Shakey’s, Garden Grove, Calif., is evaluating its relationship with lead agency G/F/D/M in Los Angeles [Adweek, July 23].
