Hayes Rounds Out BBDO Team

CHICAGO-BBDO Minneapolis named agency veteran Steve Hayes its director of client services, completing the management team under president Bob Thacker,

Hayes, previously a management supervisor at the agency, will take account coordination duties previously handled by Thacker, who’s also the office’s CEO.

“In the past, the whole client services area was a collection of entrepreneurial account services people,” Thacker said. “As we’ve grown, we need consistency and direction and accountability among our groups.”

Though still dominated by its largest client, Hormel, the shop in the past year has added business from clients, including Fiserv, the New Jersey Department of Health and projects for OfficeMax.com.

“When I came here, we were a traditional agency doing classic—mostly television—advertising,” Thacker said. “This agency has to do more than that.”

Nearly a third of the shop’s 75 employees were hired in the past year, and one of Hayes’ jobs will be to assign staff among the agency’s accounts. He will also work with BBDO and Omnicom offices around the country.

“We’re going to do a lot more partnering of our offices,” Hayes said. “We’re finding the best partners to get the best strategic solutions for our clients.”

In addition to his six years at BBDO, Hayes’ 20-year career has included stints at crosstown agency Campbell Mithun and positions at General Mills and Land O’ Lakes.

Hayes’ appointment finishes Thacker’s reorganization of the agency’s management team. Since coming in as president and CEO in October 1999, Thacker’s upper management additions have included: group creative director Nancy Rice, chief financial officer Wes Crawford and director of business development Dave Schneider.
