Amount raised, at press time, by Wunderman through an auction of dozens of 5-by-7-inch canvases commissioned as a benefit for the End Hunger Network, a charity founded by actor Jeff Bridges. “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once one grows up,” Pablo Picasso once said, and with this project, Wunderman aimed to tap the inner child of clients, staff and friends. The WPP Group direct marketing agency sent out scores of blank canvases and asked for tiny masterpieces in return. The results—which included submissions from Bridges, David Duchovny, Bo Derek, John Forsythe, Buzz Aldrin and Ed Harris—were sold at a live auction April 14 at the Ney Center for Executive Leadership, at sister shop Young & Rubicam’s offices in New York. The offerings ranged from oil paintings to 3-D creations to doodles. WPP chairman Martin Sorrell and Y&R chairman Ann Fudge were among the highest bidders, according to Daniel Morel, CEO of Wunderman in New York. “Martin bought Bo Derek’s [canvas],” says Morel. “She did a photograph of her niece.” This particular benefit was a first for Wunderman. All proceeds go to the Santa Monica, Calif.-based nonprofit, which is committed to ending childhood hunger. “If it’s successful, we’ll add it to our list of annual commitments,” says Morel.
