Garden Ridge in Play

Garden Ridge, a mass merchant of candles, baskets, artificial flowers and other home decor items, is in the late stages of a review for its $15 million account, said industry insiders last week.
Rich Klein, a principal at Houston-based Fogarty Klein & Partners, Garden Ridge’s current agency of record, said he was unaware of the search.
“We haven’t been informed that there’s an agency review, and we’ll continue to handle [Garden Ridge’s] marketing and advertising efforts as we have in the past,” Klein said.
An industry source close to the process said a review is indeed under way. Two finalists, which have been chosen, will give presentations in New York on Nov. 19. A decision is expected by the end of the month.
A New York consultant is said to be handling the review.
The client did not respond to calls from Adweek.
The Garden Ridge account has been valued at $15 million for the purpose of the review, although spending by the retailer was $9.6 million last year and $3.5 million during January-July 1999, according to Competitive Media Reporting.
Fogarty Klein has held the Garden Ridge account for nine years.
The Houston-based retailer operates about 30 stores across the Southwest and Southeast. Each location encompasses about three acres of low-priced merchandise, according to Hoover’s Online. Half of the stores are located in Texas.
The retailer caters to women, who make up 85 percent of the store’s customer base. K
