Deutsch Names Strategy Chief

NEW YORK Mick McCabe will join Interpublic Group’s Deutsch here as a partner and chief strategy officer after the Thanksgiving break, the agency said today.

McCabe, 37, a 15-year industry veteran, joins from Publicis Groupe’s Leo Burnett in Chicago, where he was evp, director of planning. He worked five years at the shop. McCabe’s earlier agency experience includes planning posts at Omnicom’s TBWA\Chiat\Day in New York and Publcis’ Fallon in Minneapolis. His resume includes high-profile work for the launches of Nintendo’s Wii and Altoids’ chocolate confections.

He will report to Deutsch N.Y. president Van DiFebo and succeeds Jeffrey Wolf, who left the shop a year ago. McCabe’s role, however, will be larger than Wolf’s, who had been director of account planning. McCabe will oversee strategic, qualitative and quantitative planning, and also collaborate with the agency’s research and customer and data strategy disciplines to design clients’ overall campaigns.

McCabe said he was attracted to Deutsch because the agency’s staff understands the “experimental mind-set” required to achieve the best business solutions in today’s complex media arena.

“We had a fairly tall order in our search for a strong strategic mind with vision and leadership skills,” said DiFebo, in a statement. “Mick brings all of that and so much more—a keen understanding of metrics, the ability to attract and retain great planning talent and a dynamic, collaborative style.”
