Asking a potential employer for money during an interview seems like an obvious “don’t.” Peter McHugh, however, made an impression. Eight years later, he was hired by Hal Riney as managing director and executive creative director of Hal Riney & Partners, Chicago. Formerly a group cd at Fallon McElligott, McHugh admits leaving Minneapolis wasn’t easy. “Fallon is the most creatively managed agency I’ve worked for,” says McHugh, who hopes to foster a similar style at Riney. He’ll have the tools. Riney is shifting 30 percent of the shop’s salary budget to creative, which means McHugh will be busy conducting a few interviews himself. Don’t hesitate to ask for a loan.
