Armstrong Takes Charge at C&W in Portland

LOS ANGELES Cole & Weber/Red Cell has promoted Rebecca Armstrong to managing director of its Portland, Ore., office.

Armstrong, 37, was previously a group director at the shop, working with clients such as Nike Retail and Umpqua Bank. She will oversee the day-to-day operations at the office and report to Mike Doherty, president of Cole & Weber.

Armstrong fills a position that was vacated by Doherty in May 2000, when he was named president of the shop and moved to its Seattle office.

As managing director of the 20-person Portland location, Armstrong said she is charged with “building a solid creative reputation and continuing to build awareness for our fully integrated offerings.”

Armstrong joined Cole & Weber in 1992 as an account executive. Over the last 10 years, she has worked in both offices, as an account supervisor and then group director. Prior to joining Cole & Weber, she was an account manager at GGK London and an account executive for the Brompton Agency, also in the U.K.

“After she returned to Portland as a group director [in 2001], she demonstrated the right kind of leadership needed for that office,” said Doherty. “She demonstrated an ability to win new business as well as make our current clients feel cared for and comfortable with the services we provide them.”

Doherty said the Portland shop will have a “renewed emphasis on new business.” He noted that since Armstrong returned to Portland, the office has won accounts such as Gold Toe Brands and the Port of Portland.

Cole & Weber will not hire a new group director to fill Armstrong’s previous role, Doherty said. Instead, Armstrong will continue to manage her current accounts and the shop will add a few lower-level employees to support her.
