Allen & Gerritsen Wins Ikon

Allen & Gerritsen has added creative and media duties for Ikon Business Solutions, a national assignment that, according to agency executives, A&G would likely not have won prior to its acquisition of GSO/Davis in June.

The account—which sources said could be worth $20 million or more with A&G—becomes one of the Watertown, Mass., agency’s largest pieces of business, said A&G president Andrew Graff.

“We’re excited about adding a client of this stature to our roster,” said Graff, who has noted that the acquisition of Boston’s GSO/Davis was intended to give his shop credibility in pitching larger accounts outside the New England region.

That added bulk cuts both ways, apparently, as A&G prepares to defend the $3-5 million account of sister supermarket chains Shaw’s and Star Market. The West Bridgewater, Mass.-based brands, owned by England-based conglomerate J Sainsbury, enlisted Boston consultancy Pile and Co. to oversee a review process, which is still in the beginning stages, said client representative Bernard Rogan.

He gave no rationale for the review, but sources said the 185-store regional chains, which had been GSO/Davis clients, felt somewhat overlooked after that shop was absorbed by A&G. The latter agency currently ranks as New England’s largest traditional ad agency, with approximately $160 million in billings and revenue of about $20-25 million.

“We have been informed by Shaw’s that … Allen & Gerritsen has been granted automatic finalist status in this review,” Graff said.

For Ikon, A&G bested three other, undisclosed agencies in the final round of a review that included a broad scope of shops nationwide, said client representative Steve Eck. Ikon represents the first major win for the agency since the GSO/Davis acquisition and since Bill Glass joined in July as svp, business development.

A&G is preparing an integrated campaign that will launch in early 2003, Graff said. Advertising, design, interactive and sales support will all be in the mix, he added.

Ikon sells and leases major-brand copi ers, printers and other office equipment to businesses and government entities. Previously, Lieber Levett Koenig Farese Babcock in New York had handled Ikon’s creative and media duties for about two years.
