2 Remain in $240 Mil. Shell Review

NEW YORK Following presentations last week as part of a global media consolidation, Shell said it has cut to two finalists: Interpublic Group’s Initiative and an entity called Shell Team Media, which combines the efforts of WPP’s Maxus and Grey Global Group’s MediaCom. (WPP is in the process of acquiring Grey Global).

Estimated billings are $240 million.

Maxus and MediaCom started the process with separate pitches.

Cut from the review were Publicis Groupe’s Starcom MediaVest and Aegis Group’s Carat.

A client representative said Omnicom’s OMD was invited to pitch but declined, citing its conflict with Exxon [Adweek, Feb. 14].

Final presentations are set for early April, with a decision expected shortly thereafter. They will take place at the client’s headquarters in Houston.

The consolidation will for the first time put all of the company’s media buying and strategic planning business with one agency.

The new contract would start in July.
