KOVEL KRESSER LANDS ENERGY PACIFIC ACCOUNT LOS ANGELES-Kovel Kresser & Partners in Santa Monica, Calif., has been named to handle the creative portion of the $20 million Energy Pacific account, after a four-month review. ICG in Los Angeles will handle the media buying. The agency prevailed over Bozell Worldwide, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Campbell-Ewald in Los Angeles; and Capener, Matthews & Walcher in San Diego. Billings are expected to double over the next year. POPPE TYSON JOINS BOZELL WORLDWIDE LOS ANGELES-Poppe Tyson's Los Angeles office is in the midst of finalizing plans to become an integrated division of parent company Bozell Worldwide's Costa Mesa, Calif., office, according to Debbie Yount, Poppe Tyson senior partner and general manager. The high-tech agency, with nearly $40 million in billings and clients including Toshiba and Western Digital, will move to Bozell's offices in early 1998 and change its name to Bozell Worldwide Technology Group. "It plays to our strengths [to be one unit]," said Yount. "We have the 'tech-sumer' experience, and Bozell has the branding and consumer expertise." It is undetermined whether other Poppe offices will follow suit, she said. Separately, Poppe has hired Bill Northrup, a Seattle freelance creative who has worked on Microsoft, as creative director. REVIEWS ROUNDUP. . . America West has narrowed the list of contenders for its $20 million account to Grey Advertising in Los Angeles; Goldberg Moser O'Neill, Winkler Advertising, and Hal Riney & Partners, all San Francisco; The Richards Group in Dallas; and one undisclosed agency. A decision is expected in November. Frame-n-Lens has selected four California finalists in the race for its estimated $4 million account: Bozell Worldwide in Costa Mesa, Grey Advertising in Los Angeles, Townsend & O'Leary in Laguna Hills and Heil-Brice Retail Advertising in San Clemente. JAFFE APPOINTED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CLIOS NEW YORK-Andrew Jaffe has been appointed executive director of the Clio Awards, said Mark Dacey, president of Adweek Magazines and senior vice president of BPI Communications. Jaffe returns to BPI after leaving the company earlier this year to serve as president/managing partner of ConEx Management's New York-area office and executive director of d:tech. Jaffe had been at Adweek since 1985, serving as editor of Adweek's Southeast edition, editorial director of all Adweek's regional editions, and as executive editor responsible for Adweek's seminar division, books, the Media School and the Adweek Directory business. As executive director of the Clios, Jaffe will be responsible for the growth of the brand globally. FOR THE RECORD Rubin Postaer and Associates in Santa Monica, Calif. was not a finalist in the Edison International review. The agency dropped out early in the process.
