NEW YORK Massimo Costa will succeed William Eccleshare as chairman and CEO of Young & Rubicam's European, Middle Eastern and African operations, the WPP Group shop said on Friday.
Costa, 45, had been chairman of Y&R's operations in Italy.
Three days ago, Omnicom Group's BBDO said it had hired Y&R's Eccleshare as chairman and CEO of its European, Middle Eastern and African operations.
Eccleshare, 49, has agreed to join BBDO's London office in that role, but a start date has not been determined, an agency representative said.
In a memo about Eccleshare, BBDO worldwide CEO Andrew Robertson, to whom he'll report, said he's known Eccleshare since 1989 when they worked together at JWT in Europe.
"He has led agencies in London and Amsterdam. He has led regional networks of complex, multi-disciplinary businesses, and he spent three years with McKinsey, [which] quite literally wrote the book on securing, developing, and leveraging talent and knowledge," Robertson said in the memo. "He is a passionate believer in the power and value of great work."
Eccleshare spent much of his career at JWT in various roles: as managing director of its London office, CEO of PPGH JWT in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and worldwide director of strategic planning.
In the late 1990s, he served as chairman, CEO of then Ammirati Puris Lintas for Northern Europe. McKinsey and Co. hired him in 2000 to oversee its European branding practice. Two years later, Eccleshare joined Y&R and Wunderman in his current role.
Jean-Michel Goudard, president of BBDO International, began overseeing BBDO's EMEA regions since 2003, when AMV Group U.K. chairman and CEO Michael Baulk relinquished those duties. Goudard and Baulk continue in their respective roles.
BBDO's accounts in those regions include PepsiCo, Mars, DaimlerChrysler, Gillette and General Electric.
