BOSTON -- Staples today named nine semifinalists in the review for the creative portion of the office supply chain's $70 million account.

In the running are: Bartle Bogle Hegarty; Bozell; Wieden + Kennedy; McCann-Erickson; and Grey's Fresh Grey division, all in New York; Carmichael Lynch and Martin/Williams, Minneapolis; The Martin Agency, Richmond, Va., and Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, according to client officials.

Incumbent Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York, declined to defend the assignment it has held for eight years.

Meetings with the semifinalists will take place at agency offices over the next few weeks. Three or four finalists will be asked to complete a strategic and creative assignment, with a decision by the end of June, client officials said.

More than 20 agencies nationwide received the initial RFP from consultants at Select Resources International, West Hollywood, Calif.
