Lowe Lintas Moves to Fortify UPS Biz

Lowe Lintas & Partners has imported Howard Portrate from its San Francisco office to fortify management of its $80 million United Parcel Service account.

Portrate was evp, director of client services in San Francisco. His primary responsibility was the Sun Microsystems account, which recently shifted to J. Walter Thompson in New York and Tonic 360, San Francisco [Adweek, Oct. 2].

Before joining Lowe Lintas in January, Portrate spent nearly two years at Ogilvy & Mather in New York, working on American Express. In his new role as evp, managing director, he will work with Jeff Saverine, also an evp, managing director, and report to New York president Rob Quish. An agency representative described the post as a new layer, adding, "Howard is the top guy on UPS."

Portrate, 42, who first visited UPS' Atlanta headquarters last week, said of the new assignment: "It's really thrilling. … It's a great brand, almost 100 years old." Sources said the account has been unsettled at Lowe Lintas in recent months and that Portrate's appointment is a move to solidify the business.

Lowe Lintas has produced six TV spots for UPS this year. Recent work positions the company as a business partner, offering advice on everything from inventory control to supply chains.

In one spot, for example, two consultants convince a CEO that he needs to "move assembly overseas" and "accelerate inventory." But when the CEO says, "Do it," one of the two replies, "We don't actually do what we propose." Another explains, "We just propose it." A voiceover says, "UPS can help redesign your supply chain and make it work."
