Hit and Run
So J. Walter Thompson, New York, hires Susan Giannino as general manager in March 1995 [“Overmanaged, Underled,” Nov. 24]. After two years of judging her work (its style, its substance) and seeing the way she leads and manages, Chris Jones names her CEO in April 1997. Five months later, Mr. Jones wakes up one morning (or afternoon, the reporters weren’t clear) and discovers that Ms. Giannino is now unable to lead and guilty of micromanaging.
With a timeline like that so glaringly ludicrous, your reporters might have pressed and asked why a perfectly good green card had to be wasted on such a creature as Chris Jones.
