Kamstra, Kruskopf Olson Gain New Executives

Minneapolis agencies played executive musical chairs last week. As Bozell Kamstra executive Bill Coontz joins Kruskopf Olson as president, Jeff Shawd, who was a group account director at Colle & McVoy, this week joins Kamstra as director of client services.

"He brings enthusiasm and a broad range of experience to the agency," Dean Buresh, BK's president, said of Shawd. At C&M, Shawd also held the title of chief operating officer of the company's Sable Advertising Systems subsidiary. Prior to that, he was director of strategic planning and general manager of Valentine McComick Ligibel's Minneapolis office.

"I hope to upgrade and improve the role and contribution of account service as it relates to marketing strategy," Shawd said.

Shawd's immediate duties will be to tutor BK's "relatively young" account management department and add more account planning to the agency, Buresh said.

Eventually, Shawd may be asked to take over some of the general manager duties that were handled by Coontz, who left the $480 million Kamstra network to join Kruskopf Olson, a 12-person, $20 million agency [Adweek, Nov. 6].

Coontz said of his new home, "We want to get into more national-type accounts that aren't just retail. We'd like to be more on a national scale."

In addition to bringing in additional contacts and business development experience, Coontz's appointment will allow agency founder and creative director Sue Kruskopf to delegate some of the duties involved with running and managing an agency, she said.

"Bill's arrival will enable me to focus more on our creative product," Kruskopf said.

Coontz, who has spent most of his career working for larger agencies like Campbell Mithun and Bozell Kamstra, said he looked forward to fostering a small agency's growth.

"Having spent a lot of time at bigger agencies, [KO's] entrepreneurial spirit appealed to me," Coontz said.
