Bacardi Rum Turns to Davidandgoliath
LOS ANGELES—Bacardi USA's rum division has tapped david andgoliath, Los Angeles, for a branding project, following a review, sources said. Sources said the review included McCann-Erickson and Ogilvy & Mather, New York; BBDO, Chicago; and Momentum, St. Louis, which has done prior Bacardi work. The assignment mainly involves cable and is budgeted at about $15 million, sources said.
Draft Adds Coors, Mercantile Exchange
CHICAGO—DraftWorldwide's first work for Coors Brewing Co. is set for early in 2004, the agency said. The Interpublic Group-owned Chicago shop was named the Golden, Colo., brewery's secondary promotions agency following a review that included the Tracy Locke Part ner ship, Dallas, and 141 Communicator, Chicago. Coors' lead promotions shop is Omnicom's Integer Group, Denver. Spending is about $15-20 million. Draft and Coors had been in contract talks for several weeks [Adweek, Nov. 25]. Draft last week also won the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's $3 million account, formerly at Cramer-Krasselt, Chicago, following a review.
Burnett to Conduct Research for Gap
CHICAGO—Publicis Groupe's Leo Burnett leveraged its relationship with former Disney exec Paul Pressler, now president of Gap, to land a strategic branding assignment from the retailer's Gap and Banana Republic stores. In-house marketing teams for each brand will still work with outside shops on ads, the San Francisco-based client said.
Fallon Cuts 16, Cites Sluggish Economy
CHICAGO—Fallon Minneapolis laid off 16 employees, or less than five percent of its staff. An agency rep attri buted the cuts to the sluggish economy. The rep said the cuts were not directly related to the losses of Timex and Nikon, worth a combined estimated $25 million in billings.
Division of EDS Talking to Shops
ATLANTA—PLM, a division of computer-services giant EDS, is talking to four shops about its $4-5 million account, sources said. Adworks in Washington, Cole Henderson Drake in Atlanta and Loeffler Ketchum Mountjoy in Charlotte, N.C., have been invited to participate in the b-to-b account. Fallon in Minneapolis, which handles corporate brand advertising for Plano, Texas-based EDS, has not decided if it will participate, sources said. A decision is expected later this month. PLM is located in Milford, Ohio.
U.S. Cellular Taps Hispanic Agency
DALLAS—U.S. Cellular Corp. has named LatinWorks Mar ket ing its first Hispanic agency. The Austin, Texas, independent shop is charged with creating regional and national marketing programs targeting Latino consumers for the Chicago-based wireless-service carrier. A review for the business was prompted by the telecom's recent entry into the Chicago market, said client director of brand development Peter Cremer. Media will still be handled by general-market agency Doner, Southfield, Mich.
Dodge to Sponsor Bicycle Race
DETROIT—The Tour de Georgia, a bike race set for April, will be sponsored by the Chrysler Group's Dodge division, the automaker said. Financial terms were not disclosed.
