Arnold Makes Anti-Smoking Cut

BOSTON—Arnold has advanced to the final round in the review for a 10-year, $80-110 million anti-smoking initiative from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, along with Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Miami, and Carmichael Lynch, Minneapolis, sources said. Arnold is pitching out of its San Francisco office. Stu Cooperrider, creative director of the Arnold outpost, previously fashioned award-winning ads for the Massachusetts Office of Public Health Tobacco Control Program while working at the agency's headquarters in Boston.

Clarks Taps Phillips for Bostonian Brand

BOSTON—The domestic unit of British footwear company Clarks has tapped Phillips Design Group in Boston for design and marketing duties on its Bostonian footwear brand, a Clarks representative said. Chores for the client's Clarks England brand are being reviewed separately, with about a half-dozen undisclosed shops making presentations. A decision is expected in the next few weeks (Adweek, June 3).

Mullen Revives Old Strategies for Foster Grant

BOSTON—Mullen's upcoming national campaign for Foster Grant revives the client's well-remembered advertising strategy from the 1960s and 1970s, namely placing big stars behind the company's sunglasses. One ad headlined "Isn't that Cindy Crawford behind those Foster Grants?" shows the supermodel wearing a pair of dark frames. It includes the copy, "Foster Grant sunglasses leave you with money left over for other things. Like that sexy French shirt you saw being modeled on the catwalk the other day. Meow." Another ad features racing champ Jeff Gordon. The campaign from the Wenham, Mass., agency breaks early next month in fashion and lifestyle magazines. When Mullen added the Smithfield, R.I.-based client in January, spending was estimated in the low seven figures.

Alvin Hollis Looks to Melton Agency

BOSTON—Alvin Hollis has selected The Melton Agency as its lead agency. The Foxboro, Mass.-based shop is charged with promoting the Weymouth, Mass., company's fuel-oil services and increasing traffic in its Bath & Kitchen Showroom. Alvin Hollis provides fuel-oil delivery and service, air-conditioning services and plumbing for South Shore residents. The campaign will include print, outdoor, radio and direct mail.

BOSTON—Advo, the $1 billion direct-mail specialist in Windsor, Conn., bought Toronto's FACC, its first foray outside the U.S. ... RDW Group in Providence, R.I., won best of show at the Ad Group of Worcester's 15th annual Mary T. Holland Awards for "Zoo Explorers," a 30-second spot for the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence. ... Kelliher Samets Volk in Burlington, Vt., has finished production on its latest ad for Rural Cellular. "Carpenter" opens with a shot of a watch reading 10 a.m. A voiceover says, "Around here, there's a lot happening at 10 a.m." It turns out a carpenter perched on a roof owns the watch, and, along with his tool belt, he's got a pocket for his cell phone.
