McCann Joins Race for Mattel's $50 Mil. Duties
LOS ANGELES—McCann-Erickson in San Francisco last week emerged as the fourth roster shop invited to pitch creative for Mattel's boys/entertainment, infant and pre school licensed entertainment properties, and global assignments. Mattel works with McCann in international markets. Also vying for the work, which has combined billings of $50 million, are roster shops Ogilvy & Mather, Culver City, Calif.; Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago and El Segundo, Calif.; and Young & Rubicam, Irvine, Calif.
WPP, IPG Talk Settlement in Brooks Case
NEW YORK—WPP Group is seeking a settlement or mediation in its lawsuit against Brian Brooks, WPP's chief human resources officer, sources said. WPP made the overture to rival Interpublic Group, which is looking to hire Brooks as evp of human resources. It came as WPP and Brooks were preparing for a trial, which is scheduled for early July before London's High Court. WPP is suing Brooks to enforce his contract, which includes a two-year noncompete clause. If upheld, the contract would prevent him from working for a competitor until 2004. WPP, Brooks and IPG could not be reached.
Riney Named Chairman Emeritus
SAN FRANCISCO—Hal Riney has retired from his daily duties at Publicis & Hal Riney and taken the post of chairman emeritus at the shop he founded. Riney, 69, had been semi-retired for years, but recently returned to assist in the failed attempt to retain the $300 million Saturn account. Riney president Scott Marshall said Riney will still help on special projects and occasionally advise the shop.
House Hearing on ONDCP Campaign Set
WASHINGTON—A House appropriations subcommittee has scheduled a hearing for June 20 on the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's anti-drug media campaign. The subcommittee, which is chaired by Rep. Ernest Istook (R-Okla.), will discuss the results of a recent study that found that the campaign has raised parents' awareness, but has not changed teens' behavior.
Sendelbach to Head LCI Chicago
LOS ANGELES—Susan Sendelbach has been named manager of LCI Chicago, part of Interpublic Group media network Universal McCann's local broadcast buying operation. She was most recently a market specialist at LCI in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. LCI handles $1.5 billion-plus in billings for such clients as Nestlé and General Motors, which last month added a dedicated supervisory team at sister shop GM Mediaworks, Warren, Mich., to work with LCI on its $800 million local broadcast account [Adweek, May 20].
DDB in New York and San Francisco has won the estimated $50 million Deloitte Consulting account, besting Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., according to sources. The client could not be reached. …
D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles made a creative presentation last week on its $100 million Crest business, sources said. The ideas all fall under an "umbrella" campaign developed for all of Crest's lines, a source said. D'Arcy has held the Procter & Gamble brand since 1955.
