A Asher Out of Anti-Smoking Review LOS ANGELES--Asher & Partners, Los Angeles, has been cut from the California Department of Health Services' anti-smoking review, sources said. The agency said in a statement that it "no longer shared the same strategic vision" with the CDHS. Asher produced award-winning anti-smoking campaigns in its time on the account. The remaining contenders for the $45-50 million account are DGWB, Los Angeles, Dailey & Associates, West Hollywood, Calif., Deutsch/LA and Ground Zero, both Marina del Rey, Calif., and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco. A Matthews/Mark Lands Union-Tribune LOS ANGELES--The San Diego Union-Tribune tapped hometown agency Matthews/Mark to develop a branding campaign for the newspaper, Web site (www.signonsandiego.com), Spanish-language paper Enlace and possibly other brand components. M/M will also handle media. A Honoring Strike, Ford Delays Ads LOS ANGELES--The striking actors unions scored a major victory last week as Ford Motor Co. confirmed it has not shot and will not shoot commercials for its 2001 line of cars and trucks until the strike is settled. "There are no Ford corporate ads being shot during the strike, and the Ford Division--the marketing arm for Ford cars and trucks--confirmed that they will not shoot model 2001 ads until the strike is settled," said Tom Mattia, vp of public affairs at Lincoln Mercury, a Ford division. Ford logged more than $600 million in media expenditures in 1998. A The Phelps Group to Launch EuroVacations.com LOS ANGELES--The Phelps Group will launch branding work for EuroVacations.com, a new travel e-commerce site. The Santa Monica, Calif., agency will handle online media, creative and permission marketing programs, offline ads and promotions on the $12 million account. A GMO Promotes Clarke in Brand Planning LOS ANGELES--Andrew Clarke was named vice president for GMO/Hill, Holliday's brand planning department. Clarke will handle such accounts as the HostPro brand of Micronpc.com and Cisco Systems. Before joining the agency in 1998, Clarke, 34, worked at J. Walter Thompson, San Francisco, and TBWA\Chiat\Day, Playa del Rey, Calif. A Balagia Named Creative Club President LOS ANGELES--Terry Balagia, executive creative director of D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Los Angeles, was chosen to serve as the new president of the Los Angeles Creative Club.
