Hill, Holliday Survives First Union Cut
BOSTON--Three agencies have moved into the final round of the $5-8 million review for First Union Corp.'s wholesale financial products division. They are Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Boston, and New York shops Citigate and Brouillard Communications, a unit of J. Walter Thompson, sources said. Ingalls Advertising, Boston, and Doremus & Co. and Margeotes/Fertitta + Partners, both New York, did not advance. Pile and Co., Boston, is overseeing the review process and referred questions to client officials, who did not return calls by press time. The review does not affect First Union's lead agency, Publicis & Hal Riney in San Francisco.
Holland Mark on Royal Cruise List
BOSTON--Holland Mark Martin Edmund here is among those pitching Miami-based Royal Caribbean Cruises' $10 million direct marketing account, sources said. Also in the hunt are Blau Marketing Technologies and DraftWorldwide, both Chicago; Targetbase Marketing, Irving, Texas; FCB Direct, Grey Direct, McCann Relationship Marketing, Rapp Collins Worldwide and Wunderman Cato Johnson, all New York; and possibly undisclosed others, sources said. Jan Apple, the Minneapolis-based consultant overseeing the search, did not return calls. CF2GS, recently incorporated into Bozell Worldwide, Seattle, had handled the account.
Gillette Seeks Latino Shop
BOSTON--The Gillette Co. here is holding an informal review for its $2 million Hispanic marketing account, handled for the past two years by Vanguard Communications, New York, said Eric Kraus, director of communications at Gillette. Sources said the client is considering a promotional campaign in 1999 incorporating both its men's and women's lines of grooming products. Vanguard is expected to be considered. Other contenders had not been named by press time. BBDO in New York is Gillette's lead agency.
EPB Exits Casino Contest
BOSTON--Earle Palmer Brown in New York has pulled out of the review for the creative account of Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., according to agency executives. No reason was cited. Ingalls Advertising, Boston, and a pair of undisclosed contenders remain in the pitch. Weller O'Sullivan, Los Angeles, has handled the client's creative work. Horizon Media, New York, was recently awarded media chores.
Schlotzsky's Orders Out
BOSTON--Schlotzsky's Deli in Austin, Texas, is searching for an agency to launch the 38-state chain's first national TV ad effort, according to sources. At least one Boston shop has been contacted. A publicly owned franchisee with 653 U.S. stores and 20 international locations, Schlotzsky's has issued a blind questionnaire to unspecified agencies, according to agency sources that received the query. The chain spent $2.7 million in advertising in 1997, per Competitive Media Reporting.
