A O&M Wins Barbie Makeover CD Assignment
LOS ANGELES--Ogilvy & Mather has won ad duties for Mattel's Barbie Digital Makeover CD-ROM. A representative at Mattel, El Segundo, Calif., said a $15-20 million review for all Barbie interactive titles has been scrapped in favor of product-by-product assignments. Mattel roster shop Young & Rubicam, New York, had previously won ad duties for the Generation Girl CD-ROM Gotta Groove. Separately, Mattel director of marketing communications Lisa McKendall said she will leave the toy maker at week's end to take a position with Ogilvy PR, Los Angeles. A replacement has not been named.
A FCB Breaks Athletesvillage Effort
LOS ANGELES--Foote, Cone & Belding launches an ad campaign this week for Athletesvillage.com, a new Web site for sports enthusiasts. The multimillion-dollar effort is comprised of four print ads featuring images of a couch, a TV set, a fast-food meal and a sultry, reclining woman. Superimposed over the images are the words "Coffin," "Satan," "Land mine" and "Maybe later," respectively. The themeline is, "Are we speaking the same language?" The San Francisco agency's Sports Marketing Group created and placed the national campaign. Ads will run through March in sports enthusiast publications.
A WHO Using Asher's Anti-Smoking Ads
LOS ANGELES--The World Health Organization has launched a global anti-tobacco campaign in 20 countries using ads from the California Department of Health Services. Spending is estimated at just under $2 million, with participating countries expected to contribute additional support. The ads, which parody tobacco ads, were created by Asher & Partners, Los Angeles.
A Western to Acquire Botway
LOS ANGELES--In its latest bid to strengthen its New York operations, Western Initiative Media Worldwide has inked a deal to acquire The Botway Group and its subsidiaries, Clifford A. Botway and Botway Print Advertising. The acquisition of the New York media management company is expected to close within 90 days. Terms were not disclosed. The acquisition "further underscores [Western's] commitment to expand and strengthen its New York operation," Los Angeles-based Western said in a statement. Botway's client roster includes Unilever, Bayer and Computer Associates.

Imandi.com, which allows users to request services and products on the Internet and accept bids from vendors, is narrowing the search for its estimated $15-20 million account this week, said Blake Park, client vice president of marketing. The Redmond, Wash., client plans to have three or four finalists by Nov. 15, Park said. The startup site, which launched in May, began the review earlier this fall [Adweek, Sept. 27]. A decision will be made by the end of the month. ... WireBreak Entertainment has selected Asher & Partners to create and place print, TV and radio ads for the company's Web site (www.wirebreak.com). Ads for the online digital network will target the 18-34-year-old demographic, the L.A. shop said late last week. Billings were undisclosed.
