NEW YORK – GTE has pulled the plug on its Remarkit frequent shopper program, continuing a pattern of frustration for businesses combining scanner data technology with an electronic equivalent of green stamps. GTE’s shuttering of Remarkit, which had been in test since May 1991, is consistent with its recent retrenching to its core telephone businesses. But it doesn’t obscure the fact that another effort to launch a scanner frequent shopper bonus program has failed to get off the ground.
