After more than 20 years of working for agencies in Minneapolis and Dallas, during which time he worked on dozens of national ads, Mike Gustafson decided to try the freelancing life.

He hated it.

Gustafson, 45, stuck with it for two years, producing four TV spots. “I’m not a good door-knocker,” he admitted. “I know a lot of guys who freelance and love it. I couldn’t stand it.”

Gustafson ended his two-year freelance career last month when he joined MDC Partners agency Fletcher Martin Ewing in Atlanta as creative director.
