2 Creatives Join D'Arcy

Steve Doppelt, vp, associate creative director at Cliff Freeman and Partners, and his partner, senior art director John Liegey, are joining D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, effective June 17.

Doppelt and Liegey will each have the title svp, group creative di rec tor. They will report to D'Arcy New York evps, executive creative directors John Russo and Graham Wood all.

Doppelt, 35, worked with D'Arcy worldwide chief creative officer Lee Garfinkel from 1996-98 at the former Lowe & Partners/SMS in New York. Garfinkel became D'Arcy's creative chief in August 2001. Liegey, 39, joined Cliff Freeman in 2000 from TBWA\Chiat\Day in New York.

"I really had no desire to leave Cliff, because it's a fantastic place to be a creative," Doppelt said. "It took a really special opportunity like this."

The new hires are the latest of Garfinkel's attempts to remake D'Arcy's creative department. Three months ago, he hired several Lowe staffers when the $50-60 million Heineken account moved from Lowe to D'Arcy. Last month, Gar finkel hired Russo, with whom he worked at the former Levine Huntley Schmidt & Beaver in New York.

Doppelt worked on Sprite and Sony while at Lowe. Garfinkel said it has not yet been determined which D'Arcy accounts Doppelt and Liegey will be assigned.

At Cliff Freeman, Doppelt and Liegey worked primarily on the estimated $70 million Staples account, which recently went into review. The shop declined to defend the business.

They also worked on other Cliff Freeman accounts, such as Budget Rent a Car, Fox Sports, Hollywood Video, Mike's Hard Lemonade, Midas, Quizno's and Mohegan Sun.
