Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps is taking a break from the pool to enter a “program” to ostensibly deal with a DUI conviction—his second. The gold medalist took to Twitter over the weekend to apologize to his 1.6 million fans and announce he was taking a break from the sport “to attend a program that will provide the help I need.”

Fortunately for Phelps, there are plenty of programs to help with substance abuse. What’s less certain is how long the big brands that sponsor him—among them Visa, Nike, AT&T, Subway and Speedo—will stand by amid what’s turned into a string of very public and embarrassing incidents.
